Scars
SCARS
Different injuries create different scar formations: scars of minor cuts will gradually fade where surgery or more serious accidents such as deep cuts or burns can leave the skin red, hard or raised. These problem scars, which also cause immobility or itching discomfort, can be treated by Caroskin products.
Flat and pale - the most common scars, may start red or raised but naturally fade over time. Caroskin silicone sheets and/or Caroskin Velvet Touch silicone gel can help speed up this process.
Small scars can be treated with the Caroskin Velvet Touch. When redness might persist Caroskin silicone sheets might be needed at first at night. When still persisting, Caroskin pressure garments and silicone sheet or garment.
Hypertrophic scars - are thick, raised, discolored scars that often cause itchiness or pain (dark brown, red, purple). Hypertrophic scars do not grow outside the confines of the original wound site. Children are highly susceptible to these types of scars due to their rapid growth. Several locations on your body are more prone to hypertrophic scarring such as: any area where the skin is relatively thick, the back, the chest (particularly after breast cardiac surgery) and the shoulders.
Keloid scars - grow beyond the boundaries of the wound site and are also discolored (dark brown, red, and purple). Either excessive cel growth or an allergic reaction can cause them. Keloid scars are mostly observed in people with pigmented skin types, children and young adults, people with burn linjuries on areas such as: earlobes, back, shoulders and chest
Over the years different treatments have been researched and documented. Different scarformations require different therapies. Caroskin can treat different scars without having to go through traumatic and painfull hospitalisation procedures. The following gives you an overview of the most commonly used and internationally accepted therapies.
Surgery
Surgical excision of hypertrophic or keloidal scars is a commonly used treatment but with a high rate recurrence (45%)
Corticosteroid injections
A broad consensus has been reached that injected triamcinolone is an efficacious first-line therapy for the treatment of keloids and second-line therapy for the treatment of hypertrophic scars if other easier treatments have not been efficacious.
Silicone gel sheeting
Despite initial scepticism (early 80ths), silicone has now become a widely used and generally accepted clinical management option for hypertrophic and keloidal scars. Good evidence of efficacy demonstrates that silicone gel sheeting is a safe and effective management option in first-line treatment of scars
Pressure therapy
Mixed reports on long term compliance and efficacy, but it remains a significant issue, as effectiveness seems to be related directly to the duration and amount of pressure ( of at least 15 mmHgpressure for 6 to 12months).
- Treatment duration
Depending on the type of scar and related circumstances, maturation of the scars ranges from a few weeks up to 18 months or longer. During this period, silicone should be worn daily. After a few months of daily use, you can already observe positive results (less redness, less thickness and less itchiness). Of course, this will depend on patient’s history, new or existing scar, frequency of use, hygienic measurements,...
